Star Alliance member Avianca is the world's second-oldest airline, having been established in 1919. Colombia's flag-carrier airline, Avianca has its headquarters in Bogota, Colombia, with its main hub in El Dorado International Airport in Bogota. It has secondary hubs in San Salvador's Monsenor Oscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport and Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport.

Avianca has a fleet of 189 Airbus, Boeing, and ATR aircraft, which conduct 700 daily departures. The airline has extensive operations within Colombia and other countries in South America including Venezuela, Uruguay, Bolivia and more. Its 75 destinations stretch as far as cities in Mexico, the United States, and in countries in Europe such as the Netherlands, Spain, and Italy.

Avianca Travel Experience

There are two main cabin classes aboard Avianca flights: Business Class and Economy Class. On international flights longer than 1 hour, passengers have a personal screen featuring an inflight entertainment suite of movies, TV shows, and gaming. Flights over 5 hours in duration offer meal and beverage services to all passengers, with special meals available for those with religious or dietary requirements. WiFi is available for purchase on select flights and aircraft. Passengers with Business Class tickets or Diamond and Gold frequent flyer memberships can enjoy VIP lounges in Bogota and several airports around the world. Lounges offer beverages, snacks, TV and computer/tablets for passenger use, as well as WiFi and reading materials.

Avianca Check-in & Baggage

Check-in is possible 24 hours before flight departure. Passengers can check into their Avianca flight online via mobile or computer devices. Passengers who have checked in will still need to complete the baggage drop at the airport, and there may be queues during baggage security checks. Waiting times vary across airports. Those traveling on domestic flights should aim to arrive at the airport 2 hours prior to departure, whereas for international flights, it is best to arrive 3 hours prior to departure.

Business Class

Business Class passengers flying with Avianca are allowed 2 pieces of checked luggage, each no more than 32 kg/ 70 lbs. In addition, Avianca allows 1 piece of carry-on luggage weighing no more than 10 kg/ 22 lbs, and 1 personal item such as a handbag or camera bag.

Economy Class

Passengers flying Economy Class with Avianca can check 1 piece of luggage, weighing up to 23 kg/ 50 lbs. Economy Class passengers are also entitled to 1 piece of carry-on luggage weighing up to 10 kg/ 22 lbs, and 1 personal item such as a handbag or camera bag.

Allowed Luggage Size Dimensions

Checked luggage should fit within Avianca's allowed dimensions. The length, width, and height of checked luggage combined should not exceed 158 cm/ 62 in. Carry-on luggage should have dimensions no greater than 55 x 35 x 25 cm/ 21.6 x 13.7 x 9.8 in. The personal item all passengers are allowed to bring in addition to carry-on luggage should be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you without inhibiting movement.

Additional Information

Excess baggage fees are charged for luggage that is over the allowed weight or dimensions. It is best to check on Avianca's website to avoid excess baggage charges, or to purchase excess baggage ahead of departure. Passengers traveling with infants are permitted to bring items necessary for their child during the flight such as a foldable stroller or a cradle, as long as the combined height, width and length are no greater than 115 cm/ 45 in. Permitted items for infants vary across aircraft, and it is best to check your specific aircraft allowances on Avianca's website or by contacting airline staff.

There are extra baggage allowances for passengers with LifeMiles Elite Silver, Gold and Diamond status. Those with Silver status can check 2 pieces of checked luggage, up to 23 kg/ 50 lbs each, while Gold members can check 3 pieces no more than 23 kg/ 50 lbs each. Diamond status passengers can take 3 pieces of checked luggage each weighing no more than 23 kg/ 50 lbs.
