Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is located 18 miles southwest of Los Angeles city center. It is rated as the second-busiest airport in the United States and the forth-busiest globally.

Hong Kong International Airport is built on reclaimed land on the Chek Lap Kok Island, hence its other name, Chep Lap Kok Airport. The airport is the world's busiest cargo getaway and is approximately 24 miles from Hong Kong's city center.

There are over 20 airlines that travel from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. They include Hong Kong Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Air Canada, Air China, China Airlines, American Airlines, Xiamen Airlines, Philippine Airlines, and Korean Air.

Cathay Pacific, American Airlines, and Hong Kong Airlines offer direct flights from LAX to HKG, covering the 7,250 miles in slightly over 15 hours. However, connecting flights feature layovers in cities such as San Francisco, Beijing, Taipei, Vancouver, Seattle, and Shanghai, taking between 17 and 25 hours.

Public transportation, parking, and ride-shares at LAX and HKG

Several rail and road networks link LAX to Los Angeles city center. Therefore, passengers can opt to use the metro service, train, or buses to either get into or out of the airport. There are also taxi ranks on the curbside on the arrival islands in front of all terminals. At the moment, LAX is only allowing Uber and Lyft drivers to drop and pick up passengers on the same trip.

When it comes to parking, LAX offers eight parking facilities with up to 8,000 slots outside the terminals. Parking service is available on an hourly, daily, or overnight basis.

Buses, taxis, and trains serve Hong Kong International Airport. For speed, passengers should opt for the Airport Express train, while others go for buses for which offer some breathtaking views of the South China Sea. The Airport Express train runs at 12-minute intervals and takes 24 minutes to get to Central Hong Kong from the airport. To get a taxi, travelers should get out of the arrivals hall to the designated isles for different taxis. They can pick any of these: the urban taxis (red), Lantau taxis (blue), or New Territories taxis (green).

There are parking spaces available at Car Parks 1, 2 and 4. Car Parks 1 and 4 are complimentary parking spaces for cars parking for 30 minutes or less.

Practical Information

A passport is required at the arrival airport for all visitors entering Hong Kong. The passport must have a six-months validity and at least one page for stamping. Also, passengers must prove that they are capable of staying in Hong Kong without financial difficulty.

To drive in Hong Kong, foreigners should carry their home country driving licenses. They will use these licenses to apply for a Hong Kong driving license.

English and Chinese are the most widely spoken languages in Hong Kong. English used in Hong Kong is often a shift of British English and Cantonese. However, 88% of Hong Kong residents speak Cantonese.

Hong Kong is located in a subtropical region of East Asia, 15 hours ahead of Los Angeles. Travelers can visit Hong Kong at any time of the year and expect warm weather, however beware of monsoon season, which can restrict internal and external travel. Spring, around March and April, is the best time to visit Hong Kong, the weather is milder and there are no large public holidays.

The Hong Kong Dollar is the accepted currency in Hong Kong. As of October 2019, 7.80 HKD was equivalent to 1 USD. Travelers will need to exchange their currency into HKD before traveling into the city.

While in Hong Kong, avoid public display of affection. Don't wink at anyone in the city; it may be considered vulgar.
