These cities have the same name

In 2017, Dutch student Milan Skippers failed to notice there are two cities called Sydney And so it happened that he found himself in the Canadian snow instead of the Australian sun. Oops!

A slight consolation for Milan: he is not the only one this happens to. There are more cities that carry the same name but are located miles apart. For example, did you know that Barcelona is not just a city in Spain, but also in Venezuela? To prevent you from flying to the wrong airport, we have listed the most common mistakes.

  • San Jose
  • Barcelona
  • Memphis
  • Sydney
  • La Paz
  • Portland

San Jose

Planning a vacation to Costa Rica? Be careful when booking your ticket to the capital San Jose, or you could accidentally end up in the United States. In the sunny state of California, there is another city called San Jose. And then there is San Jose de Cabo in Mexico. So confusing!

Barcelona

A flight ticket to Barcelona is usually quite affordable, so if you are suddenly charged top rate for a return ticket to the Catalan capital, it is quite possible that you accidentally selected Barcelona in Venezuela.

Memphis

The American city of Memphis is the place to go if you are an Elvis fan. This city is where the world-famous Graceland estate is located. Be careful not to book a trip to the city with the same in Egypt. If you head to Memphis looking for Graceland but instead find yourself between the pyramids, you are in for a big surprise.

Sydney

The Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and Bondi Beach: everyone knows the iconic Australian city of Sydney. Very few people know that there is a city called Sydney in Canada too.

La Paz

For weeks you have been looking forward to sunbathing on the Mexican beach of La Paz, but when your plane lands you find yourself in a big city built on top of a mountain. Impressive, sure, but you wanted to go to the beach and not the city. Turns out you have booked a ticket to La Paz, the administrative capital of Bolivia. Wrong one!

Portland

Who wouldn’t want to see the beautiful landscapes of the American state of Oregon with their own eyes? Just pay attention when booking a ticket to Portland, the largest city in the state of Oregon. There happens to be another Portland in the state of Maine.

Tip: pay close attention before booking your flight ticket!
