Couples combine both holidays and celebrate their love over wine. Those who are single or just partake in St.Trifon Zarezan instead, filling themselves with plenty of wine.

Sofia

Czech Republic

Those in the Czech Republic don’t celebrate their day of love on February 14th like most countries. Instead, they celebrate it on the 1st of May, which is also known as International Labor Day. On this day, lovers will visit the statue of romantic poet Karol Hynek Mácha and also share a kiss under a blossoming cherry tree for a year of good luck and health.

Prague

Denmark

In Denmark, people usually send the person they admire Gaekkebrev, which literally translates to “Joke Letter” in English. Senders write funny poems or notes on a piece of paper with specially cut designs, and keep their name anonymous. If the receiver can correctly guess the sender’s name, then they will receive an egg on Easter Sunday. If they guess wrong however, they will have to give an egg to the sender instead!

Copenhagen

Estonia

In Estonia, people celebrate Valentine’s Day in their own unique way. It’s called Sobrapaev, which translates to “Friendship Day.” Instead of celebrating romance, Estonians celebrate friendship instead! Gifts are exchanged between people who care about each other, such as friends and family. So don’t worry if you’re single in Estonia during Valentine’s Day. The festivities of Sobrapaev will ensure that you won’t spend this day all by yourself!

Tallinn

France

Valentine’s Day, or “La Saint-Valentin” in French, is traditionally celebrated much like the rest of the world in which couples express their love through romantic gifts and meals. However, couples in France rarely exchange cards with each other. Additionally, Valentine’s Day is only celebrated by adults and not children.

Paris

Germany

In Germany, their Valentine’s Day gifts traditionally include a pig on it, as it’s a symbol of the holiday representing good luck. Another gift that’s exchanged during Valentine’s Day are big ginger cookies shaped like a heart. They are decorated with frosting and contain short messages that express a person’s feelings.

Berlin

Italy

Besides the usual gifts of flowers, chocolates, and romantic dinners, couples in Italy also place many padlocks on bridges, lamp posts, and railings and throw the key away. Although authorities have been proactive in removing the locks everywhere, couples still place them wherever they can.

Rome

Romania

Romania celebrates their own Valentine’s Day on the 24th of February, which is called Dragobete. He was the son of Baba Dochia, whose power brought spring. Dragobete was also known as the Guardian of Love. Romanians celebrate this holiday as a day of love and the beginning of spring by picking flowers and dancing.

Bucharest

Spain

The best thing about celebrating love in Spain is that you can celebrate it multiple times a year! Besides Valentine’s day on February 14th, Spaniards celebrate El Día de Sant Jordi or “St. George’s Day” in Barcelona on April 23rd. On October 9th in Valencia, Spaniards also celebrate love on the feast of St. Dionysius, or “San Dionisio”.

Barcelona

Wales

Wales celebrates their own version of Valentine’s Day on the 25th of January, also known as St. Dwynwen’s Day. St. Dwynwen was a Welsh princess who later became known as a patron saint of lovers. On this day, lovers exchange with each other hand-crafted wooden spoons that are unique and decorative.
