How do you celebrate Father's Day? Is Father's Day the same everywhere? Thailand

S̄uk̄hs̄ạnt̒ wạn ph̀x! In Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on December 5th, the birthday of the late King Bhumibol, who was considered a remarkable ruler, as well as the “Father of the Nation.” Traditions include wearing bright yellow shirts, the colour that represents Monday in which the king was born. Fathers and grandfathers are also given a Canna flower as a gift.

Japan

Chichi no hi, omedeto! Since people in Japan are known to work long hours, the best way to celebrate Father’s Day is through spending time with family, as well as gift giving. Popular gifts include alcoholic beverages, such as sake and beer are always well-received. However, for a gift more grand, many people give their fathers expensive wagyu beef.

Pitā divasakō śubhakāmanā! Nepal’s version of Father’s Day is called Gokarna Aunsi, which translates to “cow earned no moon night.” This day is usually spent by offering prayers to the Shiva shrine at the Gokarna Temple, eating, and gift giving. Moreover, there’s a ceremony in which boys put their heads to the father’s feet, while girls put their heads in their father’s hands.

Fù qīn jié kuài lè! In Taiwan, Father’s Day is celebrated, even though it’s not an official holiday. The day is observed every August 8th which is the eighth day of the eight month of the year. In the Mandarin Chinese language, eight is pronounced as bā, which sounds similar to bà, or “dad.” Therefore, Father’s Day in Taiwan is called “Bābā Holiday” as a funny pun due to the date.

Philippines

Maligayang Araw ng mga tatay! Father’s Day in the Philippines is celebrated every third Sunday of June, even though it’s designated to be on the same day as Mother’s Day, which is the first Monday of December. The late President Aquino proclaimed the holiday to its original June date, until it was repealed by then President Estrada. However, many still deem Father’s Day to take place in June.

China

Fù qīn jié kuài lè! Much like Taiwan, China doesn’t have an official Father’s Day holiday. However, China celebrates it on the third Sunday of June, instead of the 8th of August in Taiwan. Some traditions include cooking the father a big meal, playing games like Chinese chess, and gift-giving. Popular gifts include good luck charms, flowers, and red envelopes filled with money.
