How do you celebrate Father's Day? Is Father's Day the same everywhere? Whether you and your father-figure in life are craving for knowledge, or want to adopt a certain tradition for your own Father's Day, there are many different countries to learn from that have their own unique history and customs on this special date. So, we made a list about 20 Father's Day traditions from around the world, including its celebrations in Europe.
Germany
Alles Gute zum Vatertag! In Germany, Father’s Day is celebrated on the same day as Männertag, or Gentlemen’s Day. So, the holidays are celebrated together, which involve participating in male-activites such drinking, hiking, and biking. The day is dedicated solely for men to go out and have fun, while the women and children stay home.
Berlin
France
Bonne fête des pères! Did you know that Father’s Day began in France when Flaminaire, a famous French lighter manufacturer, suggested adopting the holiday for commercial reasons? It’s true, and in 1950, the holiday was introduced by them, taking place on the same date as the one in the US. In 1952, Father’s Day was made an official holiday.
Paris
Finland
Hyvää Isänpäivää! In Finland, Father’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of November, unlike during the usual third Sunday of June. It was also recently made an official Flag Day, meaning that the flag of Finland is flown nationwide, emphasizing that Father’s Day is special enough to be honoured with Mother’s Day, which has been a Flag Day since 1947.
Helsinki
Portugal
Feliz Dia do Pai! Father’s Day in Portugal is celebrated annually every March 19th, the same day as St. Joseph’s Day, also known as The Feast of Saint Joseph. So, most families that are religious celebrate these holidays together by attending church together. After that, the rest of the day is spent with eating and gift-giving to the father.
Lisbon
Greece
Charoúmeni méra tou patéra! Father’s Day in Greece was officially made a holiday in 2010, which is very recent compared to many other countries around the world. This is due in large part to the SYGAPA association, which is composed of divorced Greek fathers. Before it was made official, SYGAPA introduced Father’s Day to honour the father’s role in society.
Athens
Latvia
Priecīgu Tēva dienu! In Latvia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of September. The holiday was officially made in 2008 to promote that the father’s importance to the family should be celebrated the same as Mother’s Day. However, there aren’t any unique traditions, so many people adopt other country’s traditions and ideas to celebrate.
Riga
Italy
Buona festa del papà! Like Portugal, Italy also celebrates Father’s Day on the same day as St. Joseph’s Day, which is March 19th. Italy has deep roots in Catholicism, so Father’s Day is very important for fathers who live by the same principles as St. Joseph. Traditionally, children write lots of cards and poems to give to their father, which is accompanied by a special lunch.
Rome
Russia
S dnem ottsa! Although Russia does not have an official Father’s Day holiday, the nation still celebrates the idea of it every February 23rd, also known as Defender of the Fatherland Day. It was originally established by the Soviet Union back in 1919 to celebrate those that served in the military. But now, it also celebrates men and fathers in general as well.
Moscow
United Kingdom
Happy Father’s Day! Father’s Day in the United Kingdom is celebrated pretty similarly as in the U.S., and typical gifts include lighters, champagne, or even trees to dedicate your father to! Also, as a fun fact, the popular song “Thank you for being my dad” by Jon Barker, impacted the Father’s Day culture in the country significantly and is popular worldwide.
