Insider tips for a great Oktoberfest

  • The beer comes in a Mass, a 1-litre mug. But go easy with the beer - the specially brewed Oktoberfestbier is strong with between 7.5-8.5% alcohol.

  • There is one trick to check if a German girl is single: If the bow on her Dirndl is on the right, it means she is taken or married. If she wears it on the left, go for it - she's single!

  • If you haven't reserved a table in a beer tent a year in advance, avoid Fridays and the weekends unless you want to line up at 6 am to get in. The best time to go is on a weekday before 4 pm or late in the evening, just before the tents close around midnight.

  • Be prepared for German Schlager songs like Das rote Pferd or Fliegerlied. There are a lot of cheering traditions like standing on the bench and singing ein Prosit. You might need a few beers first, but it won't take you long before you start singing with the crowd!

  • Check out the official website of the city of Munich which provides information about all the events, such as the new Oktoberfest App with a lot of information for visitors!
