With a population of nearly 4 million all looking for entertainment, this city has a fun-filled calendar of events throughout the year. Concerts, performances and exhibitions are ever-changing, but here are a few must-see events that take place annually.
The Kaapse-Klopse, also known as the Cape Minstrel's or the Second New Year, is one of the oldest street carnivals in the world. It was first held in the late 19th century on the only day that African slaves had off each year, 2nd January. Starting in District Six, as many as 13,000 participants sing, dance and march through the streets in colourful, historic costumes.
The world's fourth largest jazz festival, and the largest in Africa, takes place annually. It was founded in 2000. The Jazz Festival is held at the International Convention Centre and features musicians from all over the world.
The world's top cyclists come to the city on the second Sunday in March to take part in the 109 km long cycle race, which is the last leg of the Giro del Capo. The race starts in the city centre and runs down the Cape Peninsula in a circular route. With over 35,000 participants, it is the world's largest cycle race.
October sees the skies filled with a spectacular array of kites on Zandviel in Mulzenberg. As well as various kite-flying competitions, there are food and drink stalls and kite-making workshops. The festival has an entry fee but all proceeds go to charity.
