Why and how we should become a sustainable traveler

When traveling, we make a big impact on the environment. This is why it is very important to be more sustainable and eco-friendly when traveling, while still having a great or even better holiday!

We’ve gathered traveling tips and inspiring ideas of things you can do before, and during, your holiday to help make the world a better place, for a longer time: participate in challenges with your fellow travelers that can be fun and eco-friendly, or book with our different partners to make your travels even more sustainable.

No matter how small the impact of your sustainable travel action, it can make a big difference when we all participate and share our conscious efforts amongst the travel community.

How to start traveling more sustainably

♻️ Ditch the printer:
Use eboarding passes and edocuments where possible, and store your bookings and documents in your smart device to minimise printing where available, and try to enjoy a zero waste vacation.
♻️ Pack light (take the minimum):
Reducing the weight of your luggage can not only save you money but reduce the amount of fuel used for your journey.
♻️ Pack consciously:
Swimming in the sea? Check out if your sunscreen or other cosmetic products are oxybenzone free. Your swim exploring the reefs with certain products on may be harming the reef for future visitors. To reduce the use of plastic bags, bring along an extra small bag for food/wet clothes/purchases along the way.
♻️ Tread lightly:
Have you heard of the phrase 'Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints'. Enjoy the environment that you travel to, and step as lightly and as carefully as you can. This includes following local guidance about where you can walk, swim & climb, both for environmental and cultural reasons. When taking a tour, such as a wildlife experience, consider carefully how you interact with the wildlife, touching them or interacting might take a second but damage their future. And make sure not to leave anything behind, such as bottles, plastic bags, etc.
♻️ Support local:
Shop, eat and visit locally. When you eat the local seasonal produce available in your destination, you support the local infrastructure and reduce your carbon footprint, all in one meal. Want to go even further, bring your own reusable cutlery & straw and make sure to clear up after yourself if you enjoy your local food in the great outdoors or on that beautiful beach side.
♻️ Choose a sustainable accommodation:
Nowadays there are many sustainable accommodations available. Think of tree houses, eco-friendly hotels, organic farmhouses, green b&b, and so much more. Where they use renewable energy, believe in the zero waste rule, and use environmentally friendly products. You can use the filter on the left hand side of our hotels to search for a 'Travel Sustainable Property.
♻️ Walk, bike & use public transport:
When traveling, one of the best ways to really explore the destination you are visiting is on foot, this way you really see and experience the small things about where you are wandering in the world. Why not rent a bike, available quickly and easily in many cities all over the world now with the tap of your card. If you need to go further, try and take public transport as a way of transportation. If you want to rent a car, you can use the search in our website to choose a hybrid or electric car for rent in many places around the world, give it a try!
♻️ Travel slow:
We are all used to rushing things when traveling, thinking there's not time to see it all. So make time, stay for longer, relax and see all you want to see at a good pace. Instead doing day-trips to multiple places, think of staying there for 2 or 3 days. Doing day-trips increases our carbon footprint and does not really support locals, as it brings little money to the communities you are visiting.
