Travel in Thailand

You get off the plane and breathe in that Thai air, but what's next? If public transport is not your thing, you can always rent a car and do a little road trip around this beautiful country. But you can also get around quite well with public transport.

Public transport in Bangkok:

• Taxi: you can find them anywhere, but always make sure the meter is on!
• Bus: throughout Bangkok, you can buy tickets when boarding the bus. And buses without air conditioning are free.
• River Express boat: discover Bangkok with beautiful views over the water. Routes can be recognized by colored flags on the boat. You can buy tickets on the boat itself.
• Tuk Tuk: Mainly for the experience, not so much for the price. Agree with the driver the price in advance.

Public transport outside Bangkok:

• Bus: local long-distance buses go from three bus terminals in Bangkok to Chiang Mai and Surat Thani, among others. Tickets are sold online.
• Train: trains in Thailand don't go that fast (about 60-80 kilometers per hour), so not recommended for long distances.

Speak Thai with the locals! Start with a wai: hold your palms together and bend your head slightly forward.

The Thai are very polite. The words khrup (pronounced 'kap'), used for men, and ka (pronounced 'kah') used for women, are pasted after most sentences to be more polite. Below are a few essential Thai words and phrases to help you during your next trip:

• No = Mai ('not yes', there is no real word for no)
